When Life is Not Fair

“That’s not fair!”

Ever heard that one? If you’ve ever been around little kids (or even some folks who are maybe not so little anymore), I know you’ve heard it.  And I don’t know about you, but I know I’ve feltthat one before.

I can’t remember too many people ever telling me this, but the common retort to this protest is (you know you’ve said it at least once), “Well, that’s cause life ain’t fair kid.  Get used to it.”

Upon closer examination though, we should perhaps modify that sentiment.  Too many folks begin to think that because “life is not fair” one of two things are true: A) ‘Life’ is a personal, determinate force often styled in modern language as ‘the universe’… as in, ‘the universe is against me’ -or- B) The Author of Life (God) is not fair.

Neither is true.

If ‘life is not fair’, the Biblical testimony is that this results from people not being fair.  People are selfish.  People are self-interested.  People often don’t care about you. But God is love.  God cares about you.  God is fair…more than that, he is the God of Justice.

So what happens when some bad Israelite Monarchs from the 8th Century BC (aka King Ahab and Queen Jezebel) act really, really unfairly? The God of Justice sends in his man (Elijah), fresh off a sabbatical, to stand up and speak Truth.

It’s a great scene and I’m looking forward to spending some time there with you on Sunday at 11am!

(If you’ve missed any of the messages in this series, Elijah: Man of God, you can always go back and listen in here.)

Praying for you today,

Pastor Steve

P.S. Mark your calendars now for Homecoming, Sunday, September 8th.  We’ll be celebrating 133 years as a church and look forward to seeing many friends – old and new!  Worship kicks off at 11 with lots of special musical selections followed by a potluck lunch.
